Family Therapy: Definition

Peace, cooperation, happiness, love, among many other aspects are essential to the betterment of any family. Unfortunately, it’s challenging to find all these existing at the same time in the same family for a long period of time. It is not difficult to imagine issues developing inside a family unit. Recovering from these can be an elaborate process involving counselling in a bid to repair the broken parts of the family.

Family Therapy: Definition

According to counsellors all over the world, most cases they address concern family matters. It’s either about conflict solving, financial distresses, spouse disagreements, children-parent conflicts and even sexual issues, among many other problems. Others also bring in complaints about their mental states or that of their spouse, especially those suffering from an addiction of some kind

The fact here is that this therapy involves professionals specializing in family conflict matters and general counselling. They are basically responsible for bringing healing to families. They mostly focus on correcting the behavioural nature of individuals, communication and general comprehension of situations and relations.

Family Therapy

The best way to go about it is to consult with your family doctor on directives to the best therapist or counsellor that can handle your situations. They should be persons that possess significant education and should have a high level of expertise in their duties, be available, and charge reasonable prices.

Types of Family Therapy

It is important to recognize that the term family does not necessarily describe persons related by blood. It can be anybody who has played a long-term role in one’s life. Building on this, Laney Cline King, a licensed clinical social worker, came up with four main therapy methods that would work best in restoring the broken pieces of a family.

These included:

  • Bowenian: Operates on emotions towards the rest of the members
  • Structural: Sets distinct and essential boundaries among members
  • Systemic: Focuses on altering behaviour and communication methods
  • Strategic therapies: The distinction in this therapy form is that it involves assigning homework to members. The primary purpose for it is to assist them to interact, reach out and in the process adjust their mode of communication as well as decision making. Being the only neutral, ojective person involved in the therapeutic process, the therapist takes charge; this means no one else will have to keep a firm hold on their ego and hate or grudge against their family members.

Despite their differences, each method has the potential to be very effective in repairing a family. Which one works best for you and your family will depend on the prevailing state of said family. It could be that just one or two methods are effective, or maybe you’ll find use in all of them.

Bowenian Therapy

It works best for situations where an individual does not wish to engage the rest or part of their family in a particular concern or issue. Two main resolutions methods used for this are mainly triangulation, which helps encourage communication to all members, and differentiation, which assists in reducing emotions while communicating to any of the family members.

Just like in any organizational set up, there is the head and the subjects. This therapy focuses on marking clear boundaries between parents or adult figures and children to ensure mutual and relevant respect.

The therapist, in this case, draws themselves closer to the family to discover their weaknesses and strengths and use it to form a stable relationship among them.

It is usually a tactical one as it doesn’t involve a lot of involvement from the therapist. What it does is allow members to see the reasons behind their unpolished communication and behavioural characteristics. Typically, the trainers keep their distance in this, allowing the individual family members to discover why the act the way they do and how it impacts those around them.

How Does Family Therapy Help?

The most holistic manner to approach family struggles has so far been proven to be therapy. It offers a suitable platform to discover family strength and help it build on it.

Family Therapy Approaches

Family Therapy Approaches

The manner in which a family perceives or conceptualises taking therapy will mostly depend on the advice from other people or previous experiences.

The initial step they need to consider is self-acceptance.  It is a key factor to begin with as it opens up all the problems, issues as well as concerns which require quick and reliable solutions.

Next, they need to look for a professional expert who specialises in counselling of therapeutic training. He or she will offer you the best plan towards the redemption of your broken family.

An early decision on this is highly valuable as it saves potential harms or inconveniencies which may result from putting off the issue.

Finding a Good Marriage and Family Therapist

Marriage is primarily a union involving two people, mainly a man and a woman, who have love and affection for each other. How it develops and how long it lasts depends on both parties. If they have found a good way to balance their decisions, behaviour or communication, all will be well and it will likely remain a good marriage. If they can not find this balance, either on their own or with help from a specialist, it’s likely the marriage will be a bad one.

Finding the very best therapist for the family can be tricky. Factors you need to consider include:

  • Their educational and experience level
  • Their professionalism and certification
  • Availability and accessibility
  • Services rates

When all of these meet your evaluation criteria, then that would be the best person to offer you assistance.

Almost no single family lacks at least misunderstanding, conflicts or disagreements. All these may be emerging from simple issues or unresolved quarrels, immoral behaviours and poor communication among members. Unfortunately, if this unsettlement does not meet a practical solution, the result of it may be severe chaos which may even lead to illegal actions, such as assault or murder.

Family Therapy

Family therapy, therefore, comes handy in trying to realise the causatives of all the chaos and disagreements, then applying better solutions to ensure that peace, cooperation and harmony are achieved within the family unit. The training incorporates behavioural training commonly referred to as cognitive behavioural therapy, which can assist in healing a member’s disorderly minds.

A family doctor is usually in a better position to ensure you reach out to a highly reputed counsellor or therapist to assist you in resolving the problem. It, however, should depend on your evaluation criteria which mainly should focus on the quality of services, level of professionalism, availability and rates.
