Benzodiazepines are a class of psychoactive drugs if used for a long time leads to addiction practiced for euphoric feelings. Benzodiazepines are the class of drugs which is used to treat anxiety and sleeplessness for medical purposes and also for recreational use.

The Benzodiazepines are also known as Benzos. They are a class of psychoactive drugs. The drug is also used before certain medical procedures such as endoscopies or the dental operations.

The Benzodiazepines are used to treat the panic that can be caused by hallucinogen intoxication. It is used for those patients who are in intensive care unit as well as for acute mania.


Benzodiazepines are a class of drugs which is mainly used to treat anxiety and sleeplessness. Although it used as a remedy to induce sleep, it is used for euphoric purposes too. The famous Elvis Presley was well known for using this drug.

This is mainly used in surgical procedures when someone is anxious about the surgery. It is used in handling anxiety disorders like phobias, panicky and general anxiety.

Actions of Benzodiazepines

The Benzos are psychoactive that produces the response on the same time. These are hypnotic, sedative, anxiolytic, muscle relaxant, and anti convulsant. These show quick effect in treating anxiety, insomnia, agitation, seizures, muscle spasm and helpful for alcohol withdrawal.

Side Effects of Benzodiazepines

After using the Benzos it affects the body and shows the side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, depression, weakness, trembling, chest pain, jaundice, and confusion, loss of appetite and head ache as well as low eye sight.


Some of the common side effects include drowsiness and impaired thinking ability. Also it causes:


It is better for the patients to inform the physician if they have any of the following:

– Allergy
Mental illness
– Long disorders
– Asthma
– Difficulties in swallowing
– Skeletal problems

Patients undergoing any treatment should not work in hazardous works in machinery, or driving as sometimes it creates dizziness which ultimately ends in fatal results.

Overdose of Benzodiazepines

It devastates the whole life if there is overdose in quantity. The over dose may cause coma, change in heart beet, admittance to intensive care, respiratory depression, and death. In pregnancy time it is harmful for infant as well as for mother both. Child may suffer from neurodevelopment and clinical symptoms.

Symptoms of Overdose

Overdose of the drug will lead to severe outcomes. It will be more severe than the usual medications. Patients should consult physician if they have:

– Weakness
– Slurred speech
– Drowsiness
– Convulsions etc.


People who use drugs for recreational reasons may sometimes want to quit. There are few solutions like self-control, behavioral conduct and rehab centers. Some are especially dedicated to the drug adductors even in particular for benzodiazepines also.
