Asperger Syndrome Meaning

Most of the time, many people perceive some mild mental illnesses’ effects as just normal. Medical researches all over the world have made several discoveries of such ignored illnesses, which in many cases develop into severe ill-health conditions. Asperger’s Syndrome acts as a typical example.

The syndrome begins during childhood and manifests by affecting the behavioral characteristics of the patient. Parents will often observe strange movements and reactions by their child. Often affected children would avoid eye contact when conversing and more so will be obsessed with particular topics that they love discussing.

What is Asperger Syndrome

Furthermore, such children would form phobic elements against social life. They are likely to behave awkwardly, such as not knowing what to say in a given situation or when approached socially. Sadly, this sickness can prevail for many years, or it can even be a lifelong illness.

Medical experts define it as a “High-Functioning” syndrome belonging to a group of autism spectrum mental illnesses, commonly known as ASD. The category consists of mental sicknesses bearing similar to almost the same characteristics.

Its diagnosis process involves high-level mental health specialists such as a psychiatrist, pediatric neurologist, or developmental pediatrician. Treatment options will depend on the illness’ advancement level in conjunction with the response of the patients to a given curing procedure.

Subjective Evidence Indicating the Presence of Asperger’s

Various phenomenon and ill-health evidence exist for Asperger’s. Some may be very irritating and disturbing, especially to surrounding people. Before diagnosis, most parents will notice the peculiar behavioral characteristics of their children.

However, the following will assist you in getting an early diagnosis.

  • Children suffering from this syndrome often find it difficult socializing with persons of their age. Instead, they would prefer those older or younger.
  • They often tend to talk or discuss one single topic which keeps them fully occupied and do not wish to change it. Their conversation about those topics is usually long-winded.
  • Their conversation style remains awkward. They do not show usual facial expressions or postures when conversing and frequently avoid eye contacts.
  • They have little humor; they seem very unmoved with other people’s personal feelings and therefore lack empathy since they are never correctly “reading” people’s mind.
  • Most of them are egocentric and self-centered. They only mind themselves and do not comprehend give-and-take conversations.
  • Despite having the polished vocabulary, they may still communicate in a rigid, erratic and candid manner; they also usually talk very quickly.
  • May show obsessive characteristics, especially with particular routines.
  • Might get annoyed or pissed off over small, comprehensible matters.
  • May get hyper-stimulated from sensory stimulants such as lights, texture or sounds.
  • They may be seen performing certain rhythmical movements like flapping fingers for the prolonged time.
  • They may display an incoordination of muscles.
  • Depression and anger may be noticed.

Social Subjective Evidence

These symptoms refer to those mental disorder indicators experienced during social occasions, situations or places which defines the presence of Asperger’s. They actually occur at the beginning phases of the illness. They include:

  • Inability to speak properly using relevant terms. Often their speech is characterized by rigidity.
  • Patients avoid eye contact while conversing.
  • They lack empathy; may not feel for the neighboring persons – they always think of themselves.
  • Patients miss out incorporating relevant facial expressions while talking – in cases they do utilize them, then they are always awkward.
  • May be particular about eating certain foods and not any others.
  • They find it much more comfortable forming friendly relationships with either people younger or older than them.
  • Often prefer talking about one same topic over and over which may become boring to the listeners.
  • They get angry and pissed off over little issues that may be addressed through simple means.

Note that this evidence may appear differently from person to person, minding that people have varied body formation which responds differently to illnesses.

Doctor’s early intervention assists in eliminating or reducing the ill-health impacts.

Language and Speech Issues

Proper speaking techniques involve using correct language polished with relevant vocabularies. In an event that one cannot communicate in such terms, such as always using rigid words, then no better conversation progresses. Though not very severe, this syndrome causes communication barriers among its patients.

Most patients will fail to use proper facial expressions or gestures while speaking. Remember, with relevant communication postures and gestures, one can easily get to fully understand the content of the message you mean to pass. These people will always use inappropriate language, gestures and facial expressions.

Signs of Asperger Syndrome

In some cases, words they speak may not be clear, owing to the fact that they experience poor muscle coordination. Also, they may use unpleasant tones to address issues meant to describe joyfulness or happiness.

Special therapy, however, exits to correct the poor language commutation skills among the infected children. The program involves training on using various tones rather than just using their normal flat tone. It also helps install two-way communication strategies while incorporating eye contact and facial expressions.

Cognitive Actions

One thing this syndrome affects is thinking capability. Children suffering from it usually develop reasoning problems which translate into emotional interruptions and peculiar behaviors. Parents who may not understand this symptom and often find it annoying might pick constant quarrels with their children hoping to correct them. However, these methods do not usually work for them.

Such behaviors include: improper reasoning, emotional distress, and constant repetitive actions.

Children diagnosed with this illness often require a therapist specialized in training them to control their emotions. Through the training, they will be competent in handling outbursts, preoccupations or failures.

Physical Indicators

Physical indicators which define Asperger’s come in different variations, some of which may be hard to understand unless you are a health specialist.

Several types of research have been conducted to establish some of the common physical symptoms of this chronic illness. These include:

  • Improper muscle coordination which affects children’s movements.
  • Facial asymmetry: Medical research on Autism disorders indicates that high percentages of persons suffering from this illness often show some sort of facial deformity in terms of feature alignment.
  • Awkward repetitive movements that often seem uncoordinated.
  • Some do have distinctive strength.

Correction of these will also require a health therapist’s assistance, who can help the patient gain control over these symptoms.

Diagnosis Procedure

Upon experiencing or viewing some of the relating signs and symptoms of this syndrome, the next best action to take as a parent is always to seek medical council. Most parents, however, do not wish to have their children identified with elements of abnormality as it causes lots of pain in them. Thus in most cases, they do not accept the reality of their children’s condition and hence chose to either hide them or simply believe they are okay.

Diagnosis Procedure Asperger

Such decisions may, however, be very inconveniencing. Considering that your child is not perfect cognitively, then there is a high chance they may continue with certain unbecoming behaviors, which ultimately will affect your peace and that of your neighbors. Even in sad situations, it might cause depression on your side as a parent when you know the situation with your child.

The diagnosis procedure is usually done in a health facility set-up with qualified health specialists. The procedure involves particular tests carried out that look for and identify signs of Asperger’s in your child. These tests include a general health inspection and behavioral and speech analysis. If your child is diagnosed with the illness, you will likely be referred to specific therapists dealing with the correction of the signs and symptoms that come along with it.

Remember early diagnosis is crucial to any patient. At least some of the conditions might have not yet developed into severe ones. Proper coaching by a doctor will help improve the patient’s condition.

Top 5 Common and Initial Asperger’s Indicators

This syndrome comes with a long list of subjective indicators which manifest immediately once one acquires the illness. They may occur differently among people.  However, there is the very common ones which primarily indicate the existence of the infection.

Here are the most common indicators you need to look for, and, if found, seek medical help as soon as possible.

  • When a child acquires this syndrome, the very first thing you will notice about them is lack of proper communication skills. This will be characterized by improper facial expression and body gestures/posture.
  • They will also indicate low reasoning capability combined with emotional distresses and depression.
  • Elements of impulsivity are likely to be witnessed. The condition affects muscle coordination and as a result, patients tend to make some sudden unpredicted movements.
  • These patients also perform certain actions like flapping their fingers constantly/repeatedly in a given manner.
  • Lastly, these patients always have problems with reasoning. They often perceive obvious things differently.

Apart from the above-listed ones, other ill-health indicators relating to this condition exist and can be controlled via a doctor’s close supervision.

Causes of Asperger’s Syndrome

Studies have gone deep into establishing the real causatives of this syndrome. Different reports have been written explaining possible factors which may likely lead to the acquisition of this condition.

Here are possible triggers:

As many people would expect, genetics show a substantial connection to this syndrome. Conversely, no particular gene has been discovered to bear the disorder, yet it’s being considered that it runs in the family blood.

Just to illustrate, if you have twins and one has the condition, chances are good that the other is at high risk of acquiring it too. Also, if your bloodline is linked with the condition, there is a definite possibility that you might inherit the sickness. Also, if one is a carrier and meets a similar partner, then possibilities of the resulting newborn having the disease is usually high.

Other genetic conditions linked to this syndrome are Rett and Fragile X syndrome. The two show a great connection to the illness, with Fragile X syndrome commonly known as a single-gene disorder accounting for close to 2 to 3 percent of the entire autism spectrum disorders.

In other cases, gene mutation serves as a potential way through which the symptom is acquired. One needs, therefore, to be careful when exposed to x-rays.

More scientific studies are being carried out in relation to this syndrome. A definite connection between the genetics and Asperger’s has not yet been established.

Brain Changes

Further research into the brain structure of these patients has revealed that they usually show a difference in their temporal and frontal lobes when compared to normal brains.

Studies on this are underway to establish whether these changes are associated with genes, damages during birth and shortly after, or an amalgamation of them all.

A section of medical experts also believes that the condition is environmentally caused. This perception is still under more research, but at the moment those possible environments include:

  • When a baby is born from an infected mother.
  • When there are complications during birth.
  • Exposure to high-risk chemicals, such as pesticides.
  • Use of certain drugs, for instance Tubulin (terbutaline), antipsychotics, mood stabilizers or Depakene (valproic acid).
  • Exposure to certain air pollutants.

However, note that these facts are yet under discovery. A child might pass through them or experience all of them and come out free of the illness or any symptoms of it.

Asperger’s Versus Autism

Often, there exists great confusion between Asperger’s and Autism. Many people assume they are one and the same. But this is never the truth. For many years, doctors thought the illness stood on its own as a mental disorder of its unique characteristics. However later discoveries explained it otherwise.

Asperger’s Versus Autism

The most recent discovery indicates that the illness belongs to a part of a larger group known as autism spectrum disorder (ASD). Research on this indicated that the group shares similar health-related symptoms. In many occasions, people refer to the general condition Asperger’s.

In other terms, doctors refer to this disorder as “high-functioning”. This is because its signs and symptoms are perceived to be less severe compared to other autism spectrum illnesses.

Disorders under Autism bears unique, established characteristics which identify its constituents, but manifests similarly across the entire group.

Further medical research is being conducted to establish more facts concerning both Autism and Asperger’s.

Treatment Options and Procedures for Asperger’s Syndrome

Just like most mental illnesses, special procedures are usually available which help to alleviate the ailment indicators resulting from this disorder.

However, since human bodies differ in terms of their responses to particular medications, different methodologies work for different people. There is usually no one-size-fits-all tactic.

Often doctors will need to try a couple of therapies before getting the one suitable for you.

The treatment procedures for this disorder may involve the following:

Social skills training: SST is one of the key treatment methods which works effectively towards curing this illness. The therapy may be conducted either in group or one-on-one sessions. The training involves introducing your child to special units which teaches them socialization – how they can relate and interact with people around them. Often times they will model usual behaviors for the patient to practice.

Speech-language therapy: The therapy stands unique in its curative process. It assists your child to learn proper speech and adopt correct communication skills. In this case, your child will be taught how to use the appropriate language and tone relevant to a situation.

They will also learn to respect two-way conversation rules, which eases communication and brings about quick understanding. At the end of it all, your child would be comfortable socializing with the public while observing communication skills.

Cognitive behavioral therapy (CBT): Asperger’s brings disorientation of the normal reasoning capacity of the brain, thus resulting in patients failing to comprehend/perceive situations normally and correctly. CBT helps abundantly in taming patients’ thoughts and helping them control emotions.

Children who undergo the therapy often develop proper thinking habits which help them relate properly with the rest. These children will be able to handle situations such as upsurges, breakdowns, and fascinations.

Parent education and training: The parenthood education serves as a proper therapy which alleviates failures in social communication strategies while installing proper childhood techniques which assist in healthy child development.

This training might sometimes involve the incorporation of a counselor who may come in to help in dealing with the challenges faced in daily living.

Applied behavior analysis: ABA comes as a special technique which encourages excellent communication and social skills in your child. The entire procedure discourages uncouth behaviors while encouraging positive talks amongst children.

The training involves praises and use of positive reinforcements, which at the end of it all yields admirable results.

Medicine: Proper drugs which can be very effective in the elimination of Asperger’s Syndrome do not yet exist. However, a health specialist might recommend FDA approved drugs towards the curing of signs and symptoms associated with the illness.

Some of these subjective indicators can be depression, fear, and panic. The best prescription for this will be;

  • Some of the stimulant drugs
  • Selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs)
  • Antipsychotic drugs

The use of relevant medical procedure will absolutely bring a healing effect. Your child will develop proper communication and socialization skills acceptable to the public. Thus, they can achieve improvements at school and in their general lives.

The sickness manifests itself mainly in children and causes lots of effects in them which relates to abnormality. In lots of cases, it lowers the reasoning capability of children and activates poor muscle coordination. Infected children may also, show signs of strange emotional fluctuations, plus the performance of particular actions which may seem involuntary, like flapping their hands.

Additionally, patients may often prefer discussing particular subjects and always feels sad when interrupted. Improper communication skills may also be observed among most of these patients.

Medical research around it has not yet established the specific cause.  However, it relates its acquisition to a number of possibilities. These include genes, changes in brain structure or environment.

Special treatment for this syndrome involves a variety of therapies which focus on training the infected children to adopt new living habits acceptable to our society.
